This Saturday a crowd of at least 10 walkers started out from High Park shivering as we walked. Yes, I said shivering. Can you imagine that it was only 14 degrees, on the long weekend in August? No complaints from my fellow walkers, mind you.
After a quick 4k around the park, we headed out to walk our distances between 10 and 32k and to face the crowds along the Lakeshore for Caribana. The crowds were relatively thin, but the excitement of Caribana was palpable from the vendors selling a variety of delicacies to the families setting up prime viewing and partying areas. It was noticeably quieter when Rorie and I continued west past High Park to make up our 32k distance. It was also much hotter than when we started out.
Next weekend (Aug 7), we are meeting at a different location – the Ferry docks at 7:45am, for an 8am ferry. No five minute grace period on the ferry! Fare is $6.50 (return), and our plan is to walk our 16k and 24k, before grabbing brunch at the Rectory Cafe, near Wards Island. We’re taking the Centre Island ferry at 8am. If you miss it, take the next ferry, whichever comes first, and start walking! Most of our walk will be along the road/path at the south side of the island. We hope to see you there!
The week after that (Aug 14) will be the long walk (35k) for the marathoners, starting at Mel Lastman square, simulating the route for the Toronto Marathon in mid October. Others will most likely be walking from High Park that morning.
Sat. Aug 21st is a fun race day – Midsummer Night’s Run (or walk). Who’s participating this year? Do you have your fairy outfit ready? It’s not required, but it’s more fun if you dress up a little. That Sunday is potentially Rorie’s pool party. We’ll know soon if it’s still on. We’ll keep you posted.
That takes care of most of the ‘dog days of August’. Come out and walk with us, whenever you can!
