Mount Pleasant Cemetery welcomes runners, walkers and bicyclists – extended summer hours, route maps and on-site washrooms

TORONTO – May 14, 2009 –Every Spring through Fall, thousands of runners, walkers and cyclists flock to the peaceful surroundings and beautifully landscaped grounds of Mount Pleasant Cemetery – the 205-acre landmark in the core of Toronto that has been serving families for the past 133 years.

“While the main business of Mount Pleasant will always be a cemetery, it is also taking steps to engage the broader community in enjoying the grounds for passive recreation?, said Anita Mazzara of Mount Pleasant: “We’re reaching out to invite people in – not just by opening the gates of Mount Pleasant, but to make their stay more engaging and enjoyable.?

Starting on May 1st , Mount Pleasant initiated the following:

* Extended Hours. In years past, the Mount Pleasant Gates on Yonge, Mount Pleasant and Bayview were opened at 8:00 a.m. and closed at 8:00 p.m. during the summer months.

In order to make the cemetery grounds more available for early morning runners in particular, the grounds will now open from 7:00 a.m. – 8:00 p.m. from April 1st to September 30th, 2009.

* Route Maps. Mount Pleasant has published on its website three measured route maps for runners and walkers – 1 Km, 3 Km and 5 Km. These routes will enable runners and walkers to finish their entire route without having to stop at a traffic light or stop sign. All of the routes connect with the Beltline located on the northwest side of the grounds.

Additionally, starting in May, Mount Pleasant will offer:

* On-site Washrooms. Portable washrooms will be available to the public at 5 locations throughout the cemetery grounds: at the Yonge Street entrance, the pedestrian entrance near Merton & Yonge, the west entrance on Mount Pleasant Road, the Bayview entrance, and near the cemetery office on the east side of Mount Pleasant Road.
